In 1951, at a small California inn, an accountant named George and a housewife named Doris meet for what looks at first like a one-night stand. Instead of leaving it there, the couple—both happily married to other people—decide to meet at the same inn on the same day every year.
For 24 years they meet annually, and each year they discuss their lives and their problems. Doris and George develop a deeper intimacy than one might expect to find between two people meeting for a clandestine relationship just once a year.
One of the most popular romantic comedies of the 20th century, Same Time, Next Year opened in March 1975 and ran four years on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for lead actress Ellen Burstyn, who later recreated her role in the successful motion picture. It remains one of the world’s most widely produced plays.
